Midway through her Jazz Festival concert on Saturday, the belter discarded the mike, blasted "Two Steps Away" into the fourth balcony and won a standing ovation. LaBelle will pump up the volume in Bryant Park on Friday for "Good Morning America." Two things separate Jon DeLise and Tragedy Fails from the multitude of other would be singer/songwriters in the Philadelphia area; a fresh sound that includes a string section and some serious backing credentials. DeLise was chosen by Patti Labelle to be featured on her Timeless Journey album; the legend then invited him to accompany her on tour, which ended in Philadelphia at the 2006 Freedom Concert. You know — that huge deal with Elton John last summer on the parkway. DeLise has also found a niche among the pop punk princesses by making nice with the Starting Line, who helped to make his song Hold On popular among their fans. Back Again recalls famous ’90s acoustic alt rockers such as Tonic and Vertical Horizon. The song is filled with tension, which is heightened by the presence of Russian cellist Sachino Tsinadze. Tragedy Fails is DeLise’s more than competent backing band, and is made up of Brian Black on background vocals and guitar, Pablo Batista on percussion, Mike Steel on bass, and Jim DeLise on drums. DeLise wrote "2 Steps Away," from LaBelle's latest album, so she joined him to perform that song. The pair share a producer, the Grammy-nominated David Ivory.
