Motown welcomes 2008 USBC Women's Championships 4/10/2008 By Wendy Clem USBC Communications Larry Johnson SCORES..!!! CANTON, Mich. - Motown tempted female bowlers from across the United States with the dulcet tones of a Temptations style singer at the opening ceremonies for the 2008 United States Bowling Congress Women's Championships at Super Bowl Lanes in suburban Detroit. Veteran entertainer Larry Johnson, who tours as part of a Temptations review, brought the crowd to its feet with Stevie Wonder, the Temptations and Smokey Robinson classics, getting the event off to a rousing start. Johnson was preceded by USBC Hall of Famer and Detroit area native Cheryl Daniels, who performed the national anthem, and the presentation of the colors by Detroit's Southwestern High School Prospectors Junior ROTC. Detroit hosted the event in 1928 and 1953 and set the stage for a warm third statewide welcome. Luminaries ranging from local to national appeared in person or sent video messages to the first wave of about 36,000 bowlers as the 88 days of competition officially began. Super Bowl underwent considerable sprucing up and structural change to accommodate the event under one roof, and the community welcomed bowlers along Ford Road with large, colorful hand-painted bowling pins throughout that main travel route. "We've been trying since 1999 to have this in Detroit," said Mark Voight of Farmington Hills, Mich., the Community Bowling Centers proprietor. After losing out to Fort Lauderdale and Tulsa to hold the tournament several years ago, they formulated a plan of attack: "We hugged all 5,000 delegates in 2002." "The first time, we weren't prepared for why people wouldn't want to come," said Libbi Fletcher of Warren, Mich., President of the Metro Detroit USBC and a member of the USBC Board of Directors. "So we went back and changed our focus on really wanting them here, and it worked." The ceremonial team mass ball shot followed the opening ball thrown by U.S. Air Force Brigadier General Carol Ann Fausone, Assistant Adjunct for Veterans Affairs in Michigan. The USBC Women's Championships are sponsored by Eldorado, Silver Legacy and Circus Circus Hotel/Casinos in Reno, Nev., as well as Kegel, the official lane maintenance provider.
