In life, not all stories have a happy ending.
Yet in most feel good gospel movies, there is always a happy ending. That may not be the case in the upcoming big screen debut of "I'm Goin' to Church," a project conceived by area writer, director and producer, DaJuan Savage.
"In some situations in life the outcome may not be the happy ending – such as real life," said Savage. "I really wrote (the movie) as everyday life. It's what we go through Monday through Saturday that keeps us running to the church on Sunday."
The story of "I'm Goin' to Church," which was adapted from a stage play of the same name written by Savage, centers around a pastor of an inner city church who is fighting to save his church from foreclosure; and at the same time fighting to save souls in the community, all the while being targeted by a ruthless drug kingpin who sees the pastor and the church as a threat to business. The movie, which is really a collection of episodes developed for the Web, does not follow the same script as the play.
"The play was a lot lighter and had a more gospel feel to it," said Savage. "With the movie it definitely has a gospel message but I kept it real; I kept it raw. We touch on subjects such as poverty, prostitution, drugs, gang violence – even same sex relationships. I want it to spark conversation."
The film features an all area cast, including singer Rico Nevotion, Richard Wood, Cearah Hamilton, Xavier Nash, Joisah Jackson and Jeremy Thomas.
"That was my number one thing to use local talent. We have a lot of raw talent here," said Savage, who said "I'm Goin' to Church" is his first scripted feature film, but he has produced documentaries on homelessness in the past.
Executive producer and creative director Traci Kerney said she was instantly drawn to the project.
"This is my life story in many ways," said Kerney. "It's my life growing up in East St. Louis, (Ill.) and moving to Minnesota; and through the film I relive it without judgment. That's what this film is really about to me."
"I'm Goin' to Church" debuts at the Lagoon Cinema, 1320 Lagoon Ave., Uptown Minneapolis this coming Thursday (Sept. 26). There is a red carpet arrival at 6 p.m. with the film starting at 7 p.m. Following the premiere, there will be an open-to-the-public cast party next door at the Uptown Tavern and Rooftop. Rico Nevotion’s bio reads like a “who’s who” of artists. The vocalist-songsmith-actor has traveled the world, opening for national acts, including Beyoncé, Celine Dion, KC & JoJo, Silk and Anthony Hamilton, not to mention packing in sold-out shows at Twin Cities hotspots like Myth Live.
He’s also received numerous accolades and honors. He took home 2018 Best R&B/Soul Album honors for his latest offering, Bad Chapter in a Good Book, via Akademia Music Awards, which recognizes top music talent across the globe.
None of which has gone to his head. In a field where egos typically run rampant, Nevotion’s outlook is that a person’s attitude — even more than aptitude — decides the altitude. “I’m grateful for everything God has given me because I know that as gracious as He gives it to us, he can take it away,” he said.
There are, of course, countless cases of superstars to whom that has happened — runaway success vanishing in the virtual blink of an eye. Also, in keeping with his perspective, Nevotion, instead of relocating to live the high life in the fast lane of a larger, glamorous city like New York or L.A., has chosen to stay put, comfortably ensconced in Maple Grove. “I was raised in Memphis — I love the blues — and since 14, have been nurtured in Minnesota.” The end result being a smooth combination of R&B and crossover hip hop.
When he’s not traveling or touring, it’s about home sweet home. “I don’t need to move. I do love to move around, though,” said Nevotion. Experiences abroad have given him an outlook he’d love to share with others. “A lot of artists don’t realize just how well-respected we are [abroad].
“When I went to Dubai, I was treated like a real celebrity. It reminded me of that scene at the end of Cadillac Records when [Muddy Waters] was going to London and didn’t know what to expect. And I was shocked when they laid out the red carpet — a real red carpet.”
Another lesson learned from hitting the big time came from a surprise encounter with Dion. “She is just one of humblest people you’d ever meet,” he recalled. “She was real kind. She said to me, ‘There’s something special about you, something gentle.’”
He learned much of value from meeting other stars. “Opening for those heavyweights taught me [that] I should never get content, and that though I love what I’m doing, I should never forget that it is a business as well. So, if I don’t pay attention to my product, I can become a has-been overnight.
“So, I’ll live by this code: Always work like you’re trying to get a raise and you’ll never disappoint your fans.” He added, “There’s no artist without an audience.”
He has a most practical approach to holding onto his hard-won gains. “I release all my music [through my] Diamond Effect Publishing on Diamond Effect Records.
“I’ve chosen to take this route for many reasons. I keep complete creative control of my art without any interruptions. Going through a label is no different [than] going through a bank for a loan, just higher interest.”
Nothing if not versatile, Nevotion has also carved out an acting career, which began by working with director Joe Dante on Piranha, an offbeat thriller in the wake of Jaws that John
Sayles helped script. “I wish that I would have had the opportunity to interact with John Sayles, but the times I was on set were very intense and we didn’t really get a chance to socialize,” said Nevotion.
He also starred on television in I’m Goin to Church, and in films Set in Her Ways and Bunny and Clyde, which just wrapped production. On-stage, Nevotion has acted in and directed several plays in Twin Cities theatre. For good measure, he also danced behind Prince at Glam Slam and with Shaquille O’Neal.
His road has had its share of detours through hard times, however, as part of a wayward youth involved in running the streets and ending up a gang member in prison. His older brother was with him behind bars and advised, “‘Sit on the side for a week and see if that’s really the life you want.’ I decided it wasn’t. They say once you’re in [a gang] you can’t get out, but that’s if you show fear. I just let them know I was making my choice. Then, no one stopped me.”
Now he shares his time doing outreach work for youth in schools and at community centers.
On the entertainment horizon, Nevotion’s plans on “taking my music to another level of success, then creating a platform to find artists that others never thought to search [for] to give opportunities.” He also hopes to do more movies, including writing and directing for his company Diamond Effect Films.

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?I was born in Memphis Tn, raised in West Memphis until 15 years old, and after that Minnesota finished molding me into the man I am today. My life has always been influenced by music one way or another, and it truly introduced me to a better way to express my feelings.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?Be true to yourself, because if you really love doing what you do, even when you feel discouraged you'll still keep fighting because its something you love, not just a phase.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?Yes, I've made many mistakes during my performances, but the secret is as long as you don't show it the audience will never know.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?Yes, I've been blessed to tour all across the globe. All I can say is, you haven't truly lived until you take the time to visit some of these other countries and how amazing they truly are. The TV doesn't give it justice at all.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?I'm planning to revamp my record company Diamond Effect Records in the near future. But we have pretty much all the latest equipment as well as old but goodies.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?I try to use all the outlets that are out here for us to use. Though I find that word of mouth is still by far the most affected.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?Maybe Japan again, but this time opening for Micheal Jackson. I feel like sharing a stage with him would be the most amazing entertaining feeling ever, just his energy alone would make you step your game up.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?Well I working on my new album "Bad Chapter, In a Good book". Also I will be in a few different movies coming out in 2017 and more.

Rico sat down with Parlé Magazine to set the record straight and let us know that he’s 100% with everything he brings.
Parlé Magazine: Can you give us a little background about yourself for those who may not know you?
Rico Nevotion: Music has always been a part of my life growing up. I was born in Memphis, TN, but moved to Minnesota when I was in my teens. I started off as a dancer when I was younger, I was the youngest performer to dance for Prince when he came out to Minneapolis, MN. When I got older, I transitioned into writing and singing as a way to overcome a lot of trouble I was going through. I wanted to be living proof that there’s more to life than what you’re going through. I make it my duty to spread love with my music. I lost my younger brother when he was 16 to gang violence. He had great aspirations; he could’ve been in the NFL by now. There were college scouts already trying to recruit him. I want people to look at me and know that there is hope out there for them.
Parlé: How would you describe your music?
Rico: A lot people have compared me to Brian McKnight or R. Kelly. Both have been mentors to me musically. I love the way they’re able to write and tell stories with their music. I put on a show for my fans who come to see me live, they not only hear the music when I’m singing it but I also put on a performance so they can feel it.
Parlé: As an artist, do you feel it’s your responsibility to provide a sense of social consciousness with your music?
Rico: Definitely. If it wasn’t for music I wouldn’t be here. Music is one of the only forms of communication regardless of language that can reach anyone. It doesn’t matter how you grew up or what you’ve gone through, music is one of the things that everybody can relate to and that’s what I’m doing with my music.
Parlé: What have you learned so far being in the music business?
Rico: It’s not all about the money, women and fame. Yes it all looks good on TV, but if you’re doing it for those reasons then you’re going to give it up pretty easily because those things don’t come overnight. There’s a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes that many people are not aware of.
Parlé: Are you currently working on any new projects right now?
Rico: There’s no release date as of yet but I’m working on my new album A Bad Chapter In a Good Book. I’ve released two singles from the album that people can check out, “Breathe” which has a video out and the second single is called, “Anyway I Want.” “Breathe” has more of a Pop music feel to it, it’s about a meeting a woman that takes your breath away. The video has been getting a lot of good responses.
Parlé: What can the readers and fans expect from this new album?
Rico: This album is going to have a lot of different energy, the main thing I want to stress with this album is that regardless of what you’ve been through in life, that doesn’t make it who you are. We all go through rough periods in our lives. A lot of times it takes those bad parts to make the good ones great. The album will be uplifting and fun but it’ll also have some seriousness to it at the same time.
Parlé: Will there be any guest appearances on the new album?
Rico: I’m actually working on a project with Lil’ Flip and a reggae artist by the name of Ru Bwoy O , who’s featured on the song “Anyway I Want.”
Parlé: How have the fans been treating you?
Rico: A lot of fans have been showing me love. I get so many letters with people telling me how I’ve changed their lives and gave them hope knowing that even if you’re from the streets that doesn’t mean you have to stay there. I want my fans and readers to know, never give up.
Parlé: Artists who claim to be from the streets tend to continue to glorify that lifestyle even after becoming successful, having lived that type of lifestyle, what are your thoughts on that?
Rico: I think that’s where everyone goes wrong. It’s not a crime to be from the streets, it’s a crime for me to glorify it. I don’t glorify it. The goal should be to try to get out of the hood and do better. A lot of these artists claim they’re about that life and how they have love for the hood but as soon as they get enough money they move out. I go back to the hood to show people, especially kids, that there is a better way out there for them. I don’t do it to show off, I do it to try to get other people out.
